Heraklio is one of the most important lively big cities of Crete. While your visit in Heraklio town visit the archaeological museum that exhibits findings form important excavations like Knossos, Festos, Malia etc. situated in the prefecture of Heraklio.
During summer time the municipality organizes Heraklion festival where cultural exhibitions, concerts, theatrical and dancing performances take place. In general nightlife in Heraklio city is present all year round. For a traditional lunch visit one of the traditional Greek taverns called "Rakadika".
A car is needed in order to visit the villages and the beaches in the prefecture of Heraklio. Matala village, known for the caves where young hippies used to spend their summers back in the 1960's, Hersonissos a cosmopolitan seaside village with organized beaches, large hotels and intense nightlife and Tsoutsouras a traditional non touristic village, are a few suggestions.
